Meconopsis lingholm

Meconopsis lingholm
Perennial
3-4’
Partial Shade
Flowers Early-Mid Summer
Zone 5

After visiting Reford Gardens on the Gaspe peninsula several years ago I had my first look at the lovely Meconopsis poppy. I was determined to grow them on my property. I spoke with a gardener there and asked how I could give myself the best chance for success. She said it would be difficult because they don’t like hot humid summers and they need constant snow cover. I picked a partially shaded location that stays a little cooler than other areas and I watched that winter for where the snow was last to melt in the spring. That is where I planted my 2 year old seedlings. Last summer the plants had reached 2’ and looked very healthy. I am hoping for some flowers this summer ah patience!

Prized for the beauty of its flowers Meconopsis lingholm is a short lived perennial boasting large cup shaped sky blue flowers 3” wide with a centre of golden stamens. Blooming in early summer the splendid blooms are borne on erect stems rising from a rossett of bristly medium green leaves. This hybrid perennial poppy is fertile and produces narrow seed pods. It also spreads by offsets in good growing conditions. Do not allow soil to dry out. Loves a rich compost mulch. Cut to base in late fall. Good Luck!
